Two Kinds reading and discussion

Today in class we read the rest of the story "Two Kinds" from the Joy Luck Club. From this lesson I learned that you really can do anything if you put your mind to it. Our parents have lots of expectations for us but it's usually just to look out for our best interest. I really enjoyed today's lesson because I thought the story was really meaningful and I learned a lot from it. I also related to it in a way because my parents used to make me take piano lessons and I hated it. But I told them that I didn't want to do it and we found something that I really enjoy and am really good at instead. Today I am feeling okay. I have to work tonight and I'm not looking forward to it but I need to make money.

Two Kinds question response

Sometimes, when I get really down and am having a hard time I have a lot of trouble cleaning my room. My mom is really doesn't like when the house is messy so when this happens she gets really frustrated. Sometimes, if my room gets really messy she gets really upset and will start yelling at me about it. There was one particular time when my room was the messiest its ever been and my mom and I got into a really bad argument. She said I was going to end up living like my aunt who leaves food trash everywhere and keeps her house really gross. I was really struggling with my mental health at this time and didn't feel like I was able to do the simple things like cleaning my room. After our argument, I went to my mom to apologize because I knew I was in the wrong and needed to get it done. I explained that I was having a rough time and she listened and understood and we decided we were going to clean it together. Overall, I have a really great relationship with my mom. She supports...

Reading "Two Kinds"

Today in class we read "Two Kinds" from the Joy Luck Club. I learned that sometimes it's hard for everyone to meet their parents expectations. There's always going to be something they want from you that you can't do, but how they react to it is different. I enjoyed today's lesson because I really like reading and I thought it was a very nice and relaxing class. Today I am feeling good. I'm very hot because the AC is out but I get to go home soon so i'm excited about that.

Vocabulary

Today in class we got vocabulary words and had to find images that went along with them. We also had to explain why we chose those images. I learned that it's harder to find pictures for things than I might have thought. I didn't really like this lesson because I thought it was very tedious and I lost interest very quickly. Today I am feeling ok. I have a bit of a headache and i'm having a little trouble focusing but other than that things are going pretty well. I really want to go home though.

Presentations

Today, we presented our projects on the poem we read Wednesday in class. I learned more about self expression and why it's important to not conform to the societal standard. This impacted me because a lot of the time it is easy to just try to run with the crowd so it's nice to hear about people who don't and how they feel. I liked this assignment and presenting because it was fairly simple but also allowed for discussion and collaboration. Today, i'm very tired and my head hurts really bad because I suffer from chronic migraines (whomp whomp) and it often triggers normal headaches too.

Newsela article

Today in class we had a sub and completed a Newsela article assignment with two writing prompts, check your understanding, and a quiz. From this assignment I learned that the Asian immigration percentage will surpass the Hispanic immigration percentage in 2055. I thought this was fascinating as I don't know much about immigration. I liked the lesson but it was a little confusing to navigate because there weren't really set instructions on it and I haven't used Newsela much. I'm feeling a lot better today than I was yesterday but i'm also changing my migraine medication so it's still a little rough.

I, Too

Today we read I, Too by Langston Hughes in class. After we read it we discussed what we read and answered some questions. I learned more about poetry and what it means to be an American. The poem was very impactful because it shows you the benefit of being optimistic. I really enjoyed the lesson because I thought it was very insightful and it kept me interested. I was not feeling my best today as i've been dealing with some things that have been rough on my mental health lately but I'm proud that I made it through the day!
